The Importance
of Place
Self Study

Book Design \ Art Direction \ Photography
An enticing book about a boy's self discovery in the most mundane part of America - Suburbia.

Written story, layout design, binding, and photography for an autobiography. The story ultimately dives into my upbringing and the path I took to be standing where I am today as a creative. Much of the visual direction of the book is inspired by the suburban town I grew up in near Seattle.
Inspiration for the cover came from the sign for my neighborhood called 'Frederick's Place.' I was toying with ideas for the title when it hit me looking at the sign, The Importance of Place. I thought the type on the sign had character and a uniqueness that I wanted to weave it into the titling on the cover.

Having my feet resting on this original 'place' (physically and metaphorically) I grew up in shows the starting point of both the book and my life.

Chapter Divider Layout
Chapter dividers were designed to give a brief overview of the coming chapter ahead. Photography pulls from the section of life that is being is being discussed in the coming chapter. In the above example, a self portrait was chosen as it reflected the gradual transition to a more creative lifestyle and moving away from my engineering background.
