Reflections Magazine
Photography \ Art Direction
A collection of commissioned editorial portraits created for magazines. Each a collaboration between writers and art directors to capture the human behind the story.
Dr. Wayne Larrabee
Dr. Wayne Larrabee is a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, teacher and humanitarian who has spent more than four decades treating patients and training doctors around the world. From cleft lip and palate missions to free care for survivors of domestic violence. He is also a photographer and poet who sees art and surgery as the same act of seeing the person underneath.
Working with an art director to create a visual feel for this project, I photographed Dr. Larrabee at his clinic and used the space to help tell his story. We felt it was important capture his whole breadth as a human. Highlighting parts of his serious nature while also leaving room for his warmth and openness. Ultimately, one of the photos was selected as a cover photo for the September-October issue of Reflections magazine.
Nick Mautone
Nick Mautone is a hospitality veteran and Mercer Island resident who created the Honey Deuce, the official cocktail of the US Open. He has written four cocktail books, and invented the drink after a fruit salad of honeydew melon balls and berries inspired the pitch. He’s playful, generous and passionate about helping others do their best work.
As art director and photographer for this project, I wanted the portraits to feel lively, a little celebratory, with the easy confidence of someone who has spent a career making people feel welcome. I chose to photograph Nick on a tennis court holding a Honey Deuce, pairing the drink with the sport that made it famous. We shot in natural daylight on a sunny day, which gave the images a bright, summery feel that matches the cocktail’s fresh, festive spirit. Keeping the concept simple let Nick’s personality lead, helping the portraits feel relaxed, fun and true to the US Open experience he helped create.
